ParentCamp -

As April 22nd approached, I knew that it was going to be a different feel at the Sussex Montessori ParentCamp.  Our fearless leader, Miss Kaneisha, wouldn’t be there as she was celebrating the birth of her daughter.  But as is the case with ParentCamps, someone steps up to lead the cause.  This time it was three someones- Mr. Peter McClure, Ms. Peggy Trott, and Ms. Kaytra MacDonald.  Mr. Peter helped with the logistics and food, Ms. Peggy provided prizes for the children in attendance, and Ms. Kaytra took charge of picking the winners for all of our prizes.  I cannot thank them enough for all of their help.  We also want to thank a special guest from the Delaware Department of Education, Ms. Charita Jackson-Durosinmi.

Our focus for this ParentCamp was on literacy and the discussions were rich with suggestions to encourage a love of reading in a Montessori environment.  The topics for our discussions were Unlocking a Love for Reading, Growing Readers the Montessori Way, Cracking the Code: Literacy and state test scores, and Literacy starts at home.  These topics paved the way for conversations and connections.  One of the family member said this-

“Grateful for the helpful tips that were shared from the educators. They really encouraged me as a parent to continue reading at home and instilling a love for reading with my kids.”

The engagement of all in attendance in these sessions, as well as the conversations that occurred at dinner and during our wrap up session showed the great connections that the Sussex Montessori community is constantly building upon.  If you’d like to know more about this amazing night, you can see the “story” here or the photo album here.

As we begin to think about the summer, Sussex Montessori is excited to share that we will be having our summer cookout ParentCamp on Wednesday, July 15th beginning at 5PM.  If you have ideas for topics for us to have conversations around, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at jay.posick@parentcamp.org.  ParentCamp dates for the 2026-2027 school year are July 15th, October 20th, February 10th and April 21st.  We hope to see you there!
