We listen to our participant feedback and find experts who lead valuable conversations that are important to our parents, caregivers, educators, and community members. Virtual ParentCamps are facilitated conversations NOT presentations. The expertise is the entire room where everyone is seen, heard and valued. Room 1:  Supporting Your English Learning Students at Home and School

Facilitator Jose Rodriguez, San Antonio, TX

As immigrant parents/guardians, how well does your child’s school help you understand the U.S. school system and how to successfully navigate it to ensure that your child is academically, intellectually, and social successful? How are your cultural assets and traditions used to build community ties and support within your community?

Mr. Rodriguez oversees UnidosUS’s signature parent engagement program Padres Comprometidos. The core program was founded on the UnidosUS Guiding Principles for Engaging Latino Parents, and addresses language and culture as assets—rather than issues—upon which are built skills, confidence and, ultimately, empowerment. The Padres Comprometidos program has served families across eighteen states at forty affiliate sites, reaching more than two-thousand parents every year. Jose’s many years of experience in working with teachers and parents have allowed him to serve as coach and mentor to other Education team colleagues, parent facilitators, and parents as well.

Room 2:  How to Support Blended Families

Facilitator: Tramaine Charles-Jones, Hanover, PA

Tramaine Charles-Jones is a certified Life Coach for Behavioral Therapy and Neuro-linguistic Programming. Her life goal is to assist children and blended families in any capacity with mental wellness. 

Tramaine is also currently pursuing her license to be a certified Counselor. Years of work experience has given her a knack for identifying people in need of support during difficult moments in life. Her passion for people keeps her devoted to this calling.

Tramaine enjoys listening to music, watching movies, and painting in her spare time as a form of relaxation. Her passion for helping blended families comes from her deep desire to offer alternative solutions to the challenges of those living in a blended family. 

Born in 1986 in Guyana, South America, Tramaine was raised in the US from the age of 11. Having been raised in a blended family, she understands the challenges experienced by these families. She hopes that through her company, The Kids Wellness Community Foundation, she will support and service blended families around the country. Tramaine is married and has four beautiful daughters, a bonus son and dog Lux.

Room 3:  Community Schools: How this Kind of Village Fosters Students and Families

Facilitator: Dr. Ingrid Williams-Horton, Temple Hills, MD

As Director of the Office of Community Schools, Dr. Williams-Horton focuses on collaborating, communicating, and connecting with the community, staff, and external stakeholders. Making schools “hubs” of communities is the desired outcome during her tenure. Also, changing the paradigm from “it takes a village to raise a child” to the belief that “it takes a healthy village to raise a child.”

Room 4: The Importance of Teaching Essential Job Skills in High School

Facilitator: John Braden, Norwood, OH

John began working with NaviGo in December of 2020 because he loved helping people find their purpose and was especially eager to do so with high school students on the verge of such a big transition. He has worked as an Associate Professor at NKU, a GED Instructor at Newport Adult Learning Center, a Case Manager at YouthBuild and an Employment Service Provider at the Talbert House.
