The fastest/most exciting two minutes in sports?  We have the fastest 40 minutes in family-school-community engagement! ParentCamp, 2016-2021, All Rights Reserved

Did you predict the winner of the Kentucky Derby?  If not, it was still a lot of fun to watch!  My daughter researched and found 18 of the 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby were descendants of Secretariat.  Think about that…the horse with one of the biggest hearts in history is STILL producing some of the most amazing offspring.  Now think about that in humans…..hmmmm….something to ponder.

Virtual ParentCamp is an opportunity for each and everyone of us to have an affect on ours, bloodline or not, children for generations to come.  And all it costs is one hour of time every other week because ParentCamps are ALWAYS FREE to attend.  We guarantee it will be the fastest hour of our week because you will enjoy it that much!

Ok….now on to our stellar line up for May 5th.

Registration is open now!  https://www.parentcamp.org/event/2021-05-05-vpc/.

Room 1  [Connect & Strengthen] – Prepare Your Kids for Fall by Enjoying the Summer

Facilitator:  Paula McPeake (@PmcPeake1), Cooridinator, MENT2BE, Stephens Elementary

One of ParentCamp’s dearest friends, Paula McPeake is with us this week.  Paula is a grandparent but stays young by staying very involved.  She mentors 3-4 kids, one an ELL student, runs a mentoring program at an elementary schools (look for a session on that in July or August), volunteers all throughout her school district and has taken up boxing in her 70s!

Paula realized when her children were younger that she could her kids learn all summer long and they not realize it.  She has lots of great ideas to keep the kids engaged and learning from clipping coupons, going to the grocery store, finding businesses that will let you take tours, all the activities you can find at your local library or parks and even farmer’s markets.  You would be surprised.  This would be a good session if we could get someone to volunteer to take notes, we could share a brainstorming list with the rest of the ParentCamp community afterwards.

Room 2 [Connect & Strengthen] – A Not So Scary Talk about Race:  The Effects of Red-Lining

Facilitator:  Cam F Awesome (@camfawesome), Diversity & Inclusion Consultant

Cam is back in our Not so Scary Talk series!  Cam is an Emmy Nominated, 6 time USA National Champion, 4 time Golden Gloves National Champion, 2 Time Olympic Trials Champion  Heavyweight boxer, and former Captain of the USA National boxing team. Cam Awesome is also a proud Member of the National Speakers Association.  Cam is a diversity consultant whose overall goal is to address “the elephant in the room” in a way to create change, not place blame.

Take a listen to Cam’s video after our last Virtual ParentCamp

Cam is going to explain a brief history of red-lining and then the audience will discuss their thoughts on its effect in today’s society. It should lead to a great discussion!

I am going to be transparent, I had to ask Cam what red-lining was because I had never heard the term.

Red-lining is the discriminatory practice of denying services (typically financial) to residents of certain areas based on their race or ethnicity. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 has since made this practice illegal, but the effects of red-lining remain. Because our neighborhoods are segregated, so are our schools. How can we best prepare students for the diverse world in front of them? And as adults/parents/educators, have we done any work to prepare ourselves?

Room 3 [Collaborate] – Harvard Family Engagement Course Series:  Family Engagement Research Implications and Practices

Facilitator:  Larry Holladay, Parent Advocate, Prichard Committee (@prichardcom), KY CIPL Fellow (@KYCIPL), 2020 Beverly Nickel Raimondo Parent Leader Award Winner

Facilitator:  Annette Hines, Co-Founder, Appalachian GameChangers

There was a lot of great discussion in Part 1 of this series two Virtual ParentCamps ago.  This time ParentCamp friend Annette Hines joins one of our regulars, Larry Holladay in the Harvard Engagement Course room.

Did you know there is a FREE, yes FREE Harvard University on-line family engagement course,  Introduction to Family Engagement in Education?  Are you interested in joining a group of parents and educators in working our way through the course and having discussions?  It is ok, if you are not taking the course, the discussions will be so that anyone can join at any time.  This series at Virtual ParentCamp will run every other Virtual ParentCamp.

This week we will be discussing Implications of Family Engagement Research and Practices (Sections 3 and 4 of the course).  It is very interesting.  A couple of articles which you may wish to read beforehand:

With the new version, you will be able to change rooms on your own!  Even though Julie will miss seeing you all in the main room, you can now change rooms by yourself, but you need the latest version of Zoom in order to do it.  She will still be in the main room if you need assistance, it is ok.
